Electing to bat first after winning the toss at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata, the Sri Lankan team was dismissed for 215 runs in 39.4 overs. Nuanidu Fernando (50), playing a debut match, played a half-century innings. Kusal Mendis scored 34 runs and Vanindu Hasaranga scored 21 runs. Captain Dasun Shanaka could score only 2 runs. There was a partnership of 75 runs on 119 balls for the 5th wicket between the two. At one time the Indian team had lost 4 wickets for 86 runs. Captain Rohit Sharma 17, Shubman Gill 21, Virat Kohli 4, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed after scoring 28 runs.
