Bharat Ratna 2024: Bharat Ratna President Draupadi Murmu today honored two former Prime Ministers of India, PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, with the Bharat Ratna award posthumously. Along with them, scientist MS Swaminathan, known as the father of Green Revolution in India, and former Chief Minister of Bihar Karpoori Thakur were also awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously. This program was organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

President Draupadi Murmu today honored two former Prime Ministers of India, PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, with the Bharat Ratna award posthumously. Along with them, scientist MS Swaminathan, known as the father of the Green Revolution in India, and former Chief Minister of Bihar Karpoori Thakur were also awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously.

Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao and Karpoori Thakur’s son Ramnath Thakur received the award from President Murmu. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other dignitaries were present at the event. Apart from Rao, Singh, Thakur, and Swaminathan, the government this year announced the Bharat Ratna award to veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani.

Bharat Ratna to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh
With the decision to award Bharat Ratna to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, and ‘Father of Green Revolution’ MS Swaminathan, the number of recipients of the country’s highest civilian honor has increased to 53. Five of these personalities were announced to be given this honor in 2024, which is the maximum number in a year so far. Earlier, in 1999, four personalities were awarded Bharat Ratna.
President Murmu awarded Bharat Ratna
On this occasion, President Murmu awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously to agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan and ‘Jananayak’ Karpuri Thakur. PV Prabhakar Rao, son of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, received the honor. RLD chief Jayant Singh received the award. Nitya Rao, daughter of late agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, was given the Bharat Ratna, given by her father. Bihar’s Ramnath Thakur, son of former chief minister Karpoori Thakur, was awarded the Bharat Ratna like his father.
How many people got Bharat Ratna in 2024?
India’s highest civilian honor, the prestigious Bharat Ratna, is going to be awarded to five eminent personalities who have made significant contributions to politics, governance and agriculture. They are Karpuri Thakur, Mankombu Sambasivan (M.S.) Swaminathan, Pamulaparthi Venkata (P.V.) Narasimha Rao, Lal Krishna Advani and Chaudhary Charan Singh.
How many Bharat Ratnas can be given in a year?
The recommendation for Bharat Ratna is made by the Prime Minister himself to the President. No formal recommendation is necessary for this. The number of annual awards is limited to a maximum of three in a particular year.

Rajagopalachari, former President of the Republic of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan; and Indian physicist CV Raman was honored in 1954. Since then, the award has been given to 53 individuals, 18 of whom were awarded posthumously.
