Bihar to be among India's most developed states, says Nitish Kumar

As Nitish Kumar took oath as the chief minister of Bihar at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on Thursday, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav issued his first public reaction since the election defeat. He congratulated the new government and expressed hope that it would meet the expectations of the people.

What S Jaishankar Said

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared his congratulations and expressed confidence that the newly-formed government under Nitish Kumar would speed up Bihar’s development.
“Confident that the new NDA Government will accelerate Bihar’s progress and contribute to our journey towards Viksit Bharat,” he posted on X.

Anupriya Patel: ‘NDA Govt Will Fulfil Expectations’

Union minister Anupriya Patel also congratulated Nitish Kumar after the swearing-in ceremony.
“I extend my greetings to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his cabinet, NDA leaders and all parties. They have all worked very hard. We are confident that the NDA government will fulfil the expectations of the people and ensure rapid development in Bihar,” she told reporters, as quoted by ANI.

New Faces in Cabinet; BJP Retains Key Ministers

According to PTI, Nitish Kumar’s new 26-member cabinet includes a mix of senior coalition leaders and ten fresh faces.
The BJP has retained its senior leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, who served as deputy chief ministers in the previous government. Former ministers Mangal Pandey, Pramod Kumar, Surendra Prasad Mehta, and Nitin Nabin have also returned. State BJP chief Dilip Jaiswal, who quit nearly two years ago, is back in the council of ministers.
Narayan Prasad is another minister making a return after losing his position in 2022 when Nitish briefly parted ways with the NDA.

Vice President Extends Greetings

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan congratulated Nitish Kumar on assuming office as chief minister.
“Heartiest congratulations to Shri Nitish Kumar ji on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar. Warm wishes to him and all the newly sworn-in ministers as they take charge,” he wrote on X.

Prashant Kishor Holds ‘Silent Introspection’

While Patna celebrated the NDA’s return to power, a contrasting calm was seen at the Jan Suraaj camp. As Nitish Kumar was sworn in for a record tenth term, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor reportedly engaged in “silent introspection” following his party’s disappointing performance in the elections.

Who gets what?

Bihar can have a maximum of 36 ministers, including the chief minister. In today’s ceremony, 26 members took the oath as members of the state cabinet, leaving room for 9 more ministers. The portfolios are yet to be announced.

The 26-member state cabinet has a mix of senior NDA leaders and 10 new entrants, balancing the caste and regional equations. Of the 27 members, eight ministers are from upper castes, five are Dalits, one Muslim, and 13 are from OBC/EBC categories.

The cabinet includes new faces like shooter-turned-MLA Shreyasi Singh from Jamui and Aurai MLA Rama Nishad, daughter-in-law of former Union minister Jaynarayan Nishad.


RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha’s son Deepak Prakash has also entered the cabinet despite not being elected as an MLA. He is expected to be accommodated in the legislative council within six months.

Veteran BJP leader Ram Kripal Yadav returned to prominence after defeating another RJD’s prominent candidate Ritlal Yadav in Danapur. Sanjay Kumar Singh and Sanjay Kumar have also been inducted from LJP(RV). BJP has secured 14 cabinet berths, JD(U) 8, LJP (RV) 2, while HAM(S) and RLM got one each.
