Starc registers career-best figures of 7/58

A total of 19 wickets tumbled on the opening day, marking the highest number of dismissals in a single day of Ashes cricket since 20 wickets were taken on day three of the 1950/51 Brisbane Test. In fact, only two other Ashes matches since the early 1900s have witnessed such a dramatic first day — 25 wickets at the MCG in 1901/02 and 20 wickets at Old Trafford in 1909.

This tally also matches the record for the most wickets to fall in a day on Australian soil over the past half-century, equalling the 19 dismissals recorded on day two of the Australia vs South Africa Test in Brisbane during the 2022/23 season.
Mitchell Starc added another milestone to his career by reaching 104 wickets in England–Australia Tests. He becomes the 23rd bowler to cross the 100-wicket mark in the rivalry and notably the first left-arm pacer ever to achieve it. Starc reached the milestone in 4,488 deliveries, making him the second-fastest among the group — only Glenn McGrath did it quicker, needing 4,356 balls.
